The Cathedral
Beginning Sunday, 10 November at 9:45am, our next educational series, The Cathedral presented by William R. Cook, Ph.D., will also take place in the Sunday School room. The mind cannot comprehend the symbolic and real power that the cathedral has held for much of the past 2,000 years of Western civilization in its manifestation of art, science, and religious fervor. After exploring cathedrals from the earliest eras and venturing into the monumental style of Romanesque, the course then turns to the Gothic style, developed around Paris in 12th century, which would become the predominant form of church architecture for the next 300 years. Many of Europe’s most famous cathedrals will be featured along with the “story” of each. The first lectures will include:
10 November What is a Cathedral?
17 November Early Christian Architecture
24 November Romanesque - A New Monumental Style
1 December Vaulting - A Look at Roofs
8 December Romanesque at Its Best
15 December Saint-Denis and the Beginning of Gothic Style
22 December The Urban Context of Cathedrals
29 December Notre Dame in Paris

Art In Contemplation
The Art in Contemplation lecture series will continue over the holiday season with Tidings of Great Joy: Experiencing the Christmas Story Through Art. During this five-week course, we will explore how the great artists have represented the events of the Christmas Story and how their differing interpretations can allow us to experience the mystery of these familiar stories in deeper, more powerful ways. The course will meet in the church on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm on the days below (please note that we will not meet on weeks with holidays). If you are unable to attend in person, you may also attend via Zoom:
